Karanga Ink Studio

Nestled in the enchanting Te Henga Valley in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa,
you will find Karanga Ink … a Wāhine Māori-owned tattoo studio,
specializing in the art of Tā Moko
— traditional and contemporary Indigenous markings.

When studio owner and resident Kaitā Pip Hartley first started Karanga Ink in 2015, you could find her inside the historic George Courts Building on the iconic Karangahape Road.

Now, after more than 20 years’ as an experienced tā moko artist, Pip has realized her dream of establishing a serene sanctuary just 25km from Auckland City.

There, amidst the beautiful birdsong of the Waitākere Ranges, she offers an authentic Tā Moko experience that promotes peace, tranquility and transformative healing.

At Karanga Ink, each moko is a sacred collaboration, crafted ā Wairua between Pip and her clients. She skillfully weaves the mana of their ancestors into each unique piece of art she creates.

Inspired by ancient patterns and the natural world, Pip’s style of Moko becomes a powerful expression of the individual’s story, often reflecting their whakapapa (genealogy), whānau (family), significant life events, and future aspirations.

Her freehand custom designs provide a truly personalized experience, transforming the recipients’ journeys into works of art they can carry with them forever.
With a wealth of knowledge drawn from years of wananga and research, Pip is deeply committed to her culture and craft, all while ensuring the highest standards of health and hygiene are met.

She often hosts some of her talented local and international artist friends
who also share the same commitment and dedication to their specific genres.

Have you heard the call to embrace moko?

Many feel a deep, inner pull toward ink, yet aren’t sure where to begin.

People are often drawn to Māori and Polynesian tattoos—not only for their striking visual beauty but also for the deep cultural significance and personal stories they tell.

At Karanga Ink, Pip will guide you through a meaningful and memorable journey—adorning your skin with the ancient language of symbology.

Together, you’ll transform your story and concept into a unique, custom-designed creation.

Guided by ā Wairua

Pip welcomes people from all walks of life—those who whakapapa Māori and those who hold a genuine respect and admiration for Māori and Polynesian cultures, as well as for the global traditions of Indigenous markings.

Pip works intuitively, flowing with the natural contours of your body as she translates your story into art. Guided by ā Wairua, this organic process becomes a synergy of energy between you both.
The Journey

Pip’s clients come searching for more than ink; they look to embed meaning, identity, and their life journey into every line and pattern.

She feels deeply humbled and honored to be part of this process, considering it a true privilege to share in her clients’ journeys.

Trust in the journey — everything will unfold exactly as it is meant to.
